Question from Sayak, a student:

Is 22/7 is an irrational number?

Hi Sayak,

A rational number is one that can be written as $\large \frac{a}{b}$ where $a$ and $b$ are integers. An irrational number is a number that is not a rational number. Since the number you sent $\large \frac{22}{7}$ is written as an integer divided by an integer it is a rational number and not an irrational number.

Sometimes the irrational number $\pi$ is approximated by $\large \frac{22}{7}$ but they are not the same number.
