Question from Simon:

We have 8 golfers playing 5 rounds, and want to make the pairings as even as possible (ie all play against everyone else)

2 of the players however must play together each day - due to a buggy being required.

If anyone has a formula to work this out I'd be appreciated

Simon,

I apologize if this response comes too late to help you this time. Maybe it will help next time, or help someone else, or show that you did as well as possible.

What follows is the best schedule for 7 people (a threesome and a foursome) over 5 rounds. It was found by using a computer to check all possibilities. In this schedule player 1 is always in the threesome, so really “he” represents the pair needing the cart.

Below, the position numbers represent the players and the entries (0 and 1) designate the groups. On Day 0 the groups are 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6, 7.

Day 0 : (0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1)
Day 1 : (0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 1, 1)
Day 2 : (0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 1)
Day 3 : (0, 1, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1)
Day 4 : (0, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 1)

Happy golfing!
