Question from Caedryn, a student:

After giving 25% of her stickers away, May had 50% as many stickers as Rose. If they had 200 stickers altogether at first, how many stickers did Rose have?

Hi Caedryn,

Suppose that Rose started with $x$ stickers then May has the rest so May has $200 - x$ stickers. Put the stickers in 3 piles, May's stickers, the 25% of Rose's stickers she is to give away and what's left of Rose's stickers which is a pile with 50% of what is in May's pile. Write the number of stickers in each pile in terms of $x.$ The sum of the stickers in the three plies is 200. Solve for $x.$
