Question from Erick, a student:

A rectangular strip of land has a perimeter of 124meters and an area of 385 square meters. Find its possible dimensions

Hi Erick,

Suppose the strip of land is $L$ meters long and $W$ meters wide.

Write the perimeter in terms of $L$ and $W.$ This is 124 meters so you have an equation in $L$ and $W.$

Write the area in terms of $L$ and $W.$ This is 385 square meters so you have a second equation in $L$ and $W.$

Solve the pair of equations for $L$ and $W.$
