Question from Eugene:

Have to clear a piece of land 80 acres by 500 feet wide. What is the length of the property? Thanks Gene

Hi Gene,

There are 43,560 square feet in an acre so your 80 acre piece of land is $80 \times 43,560 = 3,484,800$ square feet. If the shape is a rectangle then the area is the length times the width and hence if your property is in the shape of a rectangle and the length is $L$ feet then

\[500 \times L = 3,484,800 \mbox{ square feet.}\]

Thus

\[L = \frac{3,484,800}{500} = 6,970 \mbox{ feet.}\]

There are 5,280 feet in a mile so $L = \large \frac{6970}{5280} \normalsize = 1.3$ miles.

Penny
