Hi Gene, There are 43,560 square feet in an acre so your 80 acre piece of land is $80 \times 43,560 = 3,484,800$ square feet. If the shape is a rectangle then the area is the length times the width and hence if your property is in the shape of a rectangle and the length is $L$ feet then \[500 \times L = 3,484,800 \mbox{ square feet.}\] Thus \[L = \frac{3,484,800}{500} = 6,970 \mbox{ feet.}\] There are 5,280 feet in a mile so $L = \large \frac{6970}{5280} \normalsize = 1.3$ miles.
