Question from Karstin, a student:

The exterior of a concrete container will be 10 feet by 8 feet by 4 feet tall. The walls and the bottom are 6 inches thick. What will it cost to construct it if concrete is $\$98.95$/cubic yard?

Hi Karstin,

There are 3 feet in a yard and 36 inches in a yard. Use these facts to convert the measurements to yards.

Use the exterior measurements of the container in yards to calculate the volume of the container including its walls as if it were entirely made of concrete. Subtract the thickness of the walls from the external dimensions of the container and use these values to calculate the volume of the concrete to be removed to obtain the volume of concrete is the walls. At $\$98.95$ per cubic yard how much does this concrete cost?
