Question from Linda, a parent:

Noel correctly adds the length of three sides of a rectangle and gets 88 cm her brother Ryan correctly adds the lengths of three sides of the same rectangle and gets 80cm. What is the number of cm in the perimeter of the rectangle?

Hi Linda,

Noel measured the length twice and the width once and got a total of 88 cm. Ryan measured the length once and the width twice and got a total of 80 cm. What measurement yields a total of $80 + 88 = 168$ cm? What is the length plus the width?

If it helps let the length be $L$ cm and the width be $W$ cm and write the first two sentences above as equations. What equation do you get from the third sentence? Solve for $L + W.$
