Question from Melody, a parent:

Kate ate 1/4 of her orange. Ben ate 2/4 of his banana. Did Kate and Ben eat 3/4 of their fruit? Explain.

Hi Melody,

On the left in my diagram is the orange cut into quarters with the portion that Kate ate shaded brown. On the right is the banana cut into quarters with the portion that Ben ate shaded brown.

fruit

They can't have eaten 3/4 of the portions as more than half of the portions& are left uneaten.

How many portions are there in total? How many were eaten? What fraction is this?

Penny
