Question from Sam:

Jo is 10 cm taller than Ruth. Pam is 16cm taller than Ruth. Rod is 8cm taller than Pam.
How much taller than Jo is Rod?

Hi Sam,

I need symbols for each of their heights so I am going to use $J$ for Jo's height, $R$ for Ruth's height, $P$ for Pam's height and $D$ for Rod's height. With this notation the statement that "Jo is 10 cm taller than Ruth" can be written

\[J = R + 10.\]

Use the second and third sentence of your question to write similar equations relating $P, R$ and $D.$ From these three equations you need to find an equation that contains only the variables $J$ and $D.$
