Question from tammy, a parent:

if your searching an area and you go 300 km from point A and search 380° what or how much area would you search?

Hi Tammy,

The region searched is a circular disk with radius 300 km. The area of the region is $\pi\;r^2$ square kilometers where $r$ is the radius and $pi$ is approximately 3.1416. Thus for your search region the area is

\[\pi \; \times 300^2 = 282,743.3 \mbox{ square kilometers.}\]

If you want the area in square miles then Google can help. Just type 282,743.3 square kilometers in square miles into the Google search window.
