Question from Cindy, a parent:

Cindy's fish weighs 8 times as much as her parakeet. Together the pets weigh 63 ounces. How much does the fish weigh?

Hi Cindy,

Suppose you obtain 8 more parakeets, each of which weighs the same as the original parakeet. Thus the 8 new parakeets have a total weight that is the same as the weight of your fish. Now you have 9 parakeets with a total weight of 63 ounces. How much does each parakeet weigh? How much does the fish weigh?
