Question from Joe, a student:

i have a math question for homework that i don't understand.
can you draw a rectangle that has 18cm in perimeters and 20cm in areas.
i tried but i can't.

Hi Joe,

rectangle

The length plus the width is the distance half way around the rectangle so

\[\mbox{length } + \mbox{ width } = 9.\]

The area of a rectangle is the length times the width so

\[\mbox{length } \times \mbox{ width } = 20.\]

Hence the question is asking, do you know two number with their sum equal to 9 and their product equal to 20.
