Question from John, a teacher:

If 4444 is a number in Base5, is 624 its value?

Hi John,

Let's try $3012_{4},$ that is 3012 base four. This number has a

2 in the units place
1 in the fours place
0 in the four squared place and
3 in the four cubed place

Hence to convert it to base 10 I would add

$2\times 1$
$1 \times 4$
$0 \times 4^2$ and
$3 \times 4^{3}.$

I get $2 + 4 + 0 + 192 = 198$ and hence $3021_4 = 198.$

Now try $4444_{5}.$
