Question from Jon:

If I am climbing 16 feet in elevation over 80 feet horizontal. What is the grade of the incline?

Hi Jon,

The grade of the incline is the rise as a percentage of the horizontal distance. You have a rise of 16 feet over a distance of 80 feet so the rise as a fraction of the distance is $\large \frac{16}{80} \normalsize = 0.20.$ Expressed as a percent this fraction is 20% hence the grade is 20%.
