Question from Miura, a student:

A city block is three times as long as long as it is wide.if the distance around the block is 0.48 kilometers, what is the area of the block in square meters?

Hi Miura,

First of all express the distance around the block, the perimeter, in meters.

Let $W$ be the width of the block in meters. The block is 3 times as long as it is wide so what is its length in terms of $W?$ What is the distance all the way around the block in terms of $W?$ You know this distance so this gives you an equation in $W.$ Solve for $W.$
