Question from Olivia:

The sum of two numbers is 87 and their difference is 29. What are the two numbers

Hi Olivia,

I think you are expected to use algebra to solve this problem so I would start by saying let one of the numbers be $x$ and the other $y.$ You know that the sum of the two numbers is 87 so

\[x + y = 87.\]

You also know that their difference is 29 so this gives you a second equation. Solve the equations for $x$ and $y.$

Write back if you need more assistance,
Penny
