Question from Theresa:

If I did not know the cubic inches in a liquid gallon how would I find it?
In other words what is the formula for this?

Hi Theresa,

Unfortunately there isn't the nice answer you ask for. In the metric system there is a direct connection between units of length and units of volume. 1 cubic centimeter is 1 milliliter or equivalently 1 litres is 1000 cubic centimeters. In the US Standard Units, sometimes called English Units there is no such natural connection. You can read about the gallon on a Wikipedia page. In particular follow the link to History on that page.
