Question from Gloria:

Write the equation of a line in standard form through the point (1, 6) and perpendicular to the line 2x –y = 9.

Hi Gloria,

I would begin by putting the equation $2x - y = 9$ into the slope-intercept form $y = mx + b.$ Once it is in that form you can see the slope of the line, it is $m.$ Any line perpendicular to this line has slope $- \large \frac{1}{m}.$ The task then is to write the line with this slope and through $(1, 6).$
