Hi Jill,
Unfortunately I can't give you the answer you are seeking but I can give you some history. There is a web site maintained by a retired teacher in Florida. It's called Earliest Known Uses of Some of the Words of Mathematics. Go to his site, select the letter M and scroll down to Mean.
