Question from Penny:

I'm trying to calculate how many feet of fence I will need to fence a 4 acre square pasture.

Hi Penny,

There are 43,560 square feet in an acre. (I'm a Mac user so I asked Siri.) Hence 4 acres is $4 \times 43,560 = 174,240$ square feet. Since your pasture is a square, say $L$ feet in length then its area is $L \times L$ square feet. Hence $L = \sqrt{174,240} = 417.42$ feet. Hence the perimeter is $4 \times 417.42 = 1,670$ feet.
