Question from Yesenia:

Carmen, Austin, and Trey have a total of $\$128$ in their wallets. Trey has $\$10$ more than Carmen. Austin has 4 times what Trey has. How much do they have in their wallets?

Hi Yesenia,

I would let $C$ be the amount of money Carmen has in her wallet in dollars, $A$ be the amount of money Austin has in his wallet in dollars, and $T$ be the amount of money Austin has in his wallet in dollars.

You know three facts

  1. They have a total of $\$128$ in their wallets. This gives the equation
    $C + A + T = 128.$

  2. Trey has $\$10$ more than Carmen. Write this fact as an equation.

  3. Austin has 4 times what Trey has. Write this fact as an equation.

You now have three equations in the variables $C, A$ and $T.$ Solve these equations for $C, A$ and $T.$
