Question from Ric:

Box of oranges weighs 9 pounds. 2/3 of oranges eaten. Box and
remaining oranges weighs 4 pounds. What is weight of box when
empty?

Hi Ric,

Suppose you have the box with the oranges in it on a scale. like a kitchen scale. The scale reads 9 pounds. Two-thirds of the oranges are eaten and what remains on the scale weighs 4 pounds. Hence the oranges that were eaten weigh 5 pounds. Thus two-thirds of the oranges weighs 5 pounds.

How much does one-third of the oranges weigh? How much do all of the oranges weigh? How much does the empty box weigh?
