Good morning. Could you please, help us resolve and by the way, confirm "who is right"... regarding the solution of this problem: - a piece of metal is 6 in. wide by 2 in. in height and weights 500 pounds... - what is the weight of a piece made of same metal, 5 in. wide by 1 3/4 in in height? Could you please supply the "formula".

Regards, rf, k, p and uncle a.

Hi

I would start by caclulating how much one square inch of the material would weigh. The piece 6 inches by 2 inches is 12 square inches and hence the material weighs 500/12 pounds per square inch. The second piece is 5 inches by 1 3/4 inches or 8 3/4 square inches. Hence it will weigh 500/12 x 8 3/4 = 364.583 pounds.

So who was right?
