Subject: manual counting methods

Name: Steven D. Edmonds Who is asking: Parent Level: All

Question: I once heard about a manual counting method which when learned at an early age allowed one to be able to perform large calculations manually. I believe that name of the method (phonetically) was "chisenbok".

Is there any such creature? Where would I find information on this topic?

Hi Steven,

The technique is called Chisanbop. It was developed by a Korean schoolteacher, Sung Jin Pai. I went to an Internet search engine, searched for Chisanbop and found quite a few sites. One site with an example to show you how the system works is Family.com: Disney Online - NY - Chisanbop

Cheers,
Harley
