here's the question

I need to create a 4x4 grid using numbers .1, .2, .3, .4, ....1.1, 1.2, 1.3,1.4,1.5,1.6 the sum of the number diagonally, horizontally and across all equal 3.4

Help

Hi Maureen,

This is called a 4-by-4 magic square. It is usually stated in terms of integers. Using numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, ....11, 12, 13,14,15,16 the sum of the number diagonally, horizontally and across all equal 34.

There are two notes in the Quandaries and Queries database about 3-by3 magic squares. The first, if applied to the 4-by-4 case shows you why the sum must be 3.4 and the second describes a method that can be used to construct a 3-by-3 magic square. I think the same method will work in the 4-by-4 situation.

Cheers,
Penny
