Subject: A.P.Calculus

Hi my name is Lawrence and i am in A.P.Calculus. I am a student and i was wondering how to solve this problem.

An observer on level ground is at distance d from a building. The angles of elevation to the bottom of the windows on the second and third floors are a and b respectively. Find the distance h between the bottoms of the windows in terms of a b and d.

Hi Lawrence,

If k is the distance from the ground to the bottom of the second story window, then k/d = tan a. Thus k = d tan a. This should allow you to find h.

Cheers,
Harley
