Question:
I have a question in my book that is one and five sixths and you are to put them in an equivalent decimal. I'm sick at home or I would be able to ask my instructor. I would appreciate any help.

Hi Cheryl,

There are two ways you can solve this problem. The first is to express the five sixths as a decimal. To do this divide 6 into 5 to get 0.8333... so

5/6 = 0.8333...

Thus one and five sixths is

1 5/6 = 1 + 5/6 = 1 + 0.8333 = 1.8333...

The second way to approach the problem is to add 1 and 5/6 before making the change to decimal form. So

1 + 5/6 = 6/6 + 5/6 = 11/6 = 1.8333...

where I divided 11 by 6 to get 1.8333...
