From Jennifer Brown: What is the difference between the following problems:

(-5)^{2}, -5^{2} and -(5)^{2}

Our text book (Beginning Algebra, fourth edition, published by McGraw Hill, by Streeter, Huthison and Hoetzle) says the second and third problem are exactly the same. I don't see how that can be. Is there a mathematical rule that explains this? Answered by Penny Nom.

From Derek Yau: I would like to know why any number to the exponent 0 equals to 1 also, I would like you to please answer this question: -(4)^0 = ? I know the answer is 1 but I am confused as to if it is a negative one or a positive one. Answered by Jack LeSage and Penny Nom.
