Sort the Shapes
Geometry — Shapes

Materials needed:

  • Container of pattern blocks

  • "Sort the Shapes" worksheet

  • Pencils, crayons

Find a partner to work with for this activity

  • Choose 10 pattern blocks from the container.

  • Examine all the shapes and decide on a way that they can be grouped together, either by color; number of points or edges; whether they role, slide, etc.

  • Once you have grouped the shapes together draw or trace the shapes on the worksheet in the way you sorted them and then tell me why you sorted the shapes that way.

  • If you get done pick another 10 shapes and sort them.

  • If you finish a sheet put it in your portfolio.

  • Write down something you learned doing this activity in your math journal by using the sentence "I learned..."
