Symmetrical Designs
Geometry — Shapes

Materials needed:

  • Geoboards

  • Pattern Blocks

  • Elastics

  • Dot Paper

Find a partner to work with:

  • Select two geoboards, some elastics, and some pattern blocks.

  • One person will make one side of a shape on the geoboard and the other student has to make the other side of the shape so that it is symmetrical.

  • Also try making symmetrical shapes using the pattern blocks.

  • One student makes one side of a shape with the pattern blocks and the other student makes the other side so the shape is symmetrical.

  • Record all your shapes by drawing then on the dot paper. Make sure you tell me where the line of symmetry is.

  • Switch who goes first after each shape is completed.

  • Make at least 5 symmetrical shapes using both the geoboards and the pattern blocks.

  • Put the dot paper in your portfolio when you are done.
