An Interview In The Real World
with
Mr. Dean Goranson
Pilot, Canadian Regional Airlines

  1. What part of your job involves math and numbers?

Almost everything we do in planning for flight involves numbers: time on route, take off and landing, weight, full load, altitude and speed, wind direction

  2. Were these type of calculations new to you or had you learned about them in high school?

My algebra, calculus and physics classes helped me in my training. I had a two year training period where most of the courses involved numbers and calculation. I then received a Diploma in Aviation.

  3. Could you successfully do your job without numbers or using math skills?

No! Our effectiveness is very much dependent on our knowledge of mathematical skills and processes.
