Jabberwocky: A Lake and Island Board Project (HTML or PDF)
 
A mathematical role play using Lake and Island Boards where students plan to move from Jabberwocky to their new planet "New Jabberwocky". Activities included discussions and analysis about climate, population, distance, area and perimeter.
Life expectancy at birth
 
This is one of a collection of teaching activities on Statistics Canada's Web site. Using Canadian statistics, this exercise introduces line graphs. Students learn to label and plot line graphs with data from the table 'Life expectancy at birth' on Statistics Canada's Web site. They also learn how to determine the differences in trends in life expectancy between males and females.
Money Talks: Canadian Money
 
Money Talks is one of the resources from the Stewart Resource Center. It contains two to three weeks of lessons on money at the grades three and four levels . Included are lessons, suggestions for on-going activities, support materials and resources.
Money Unit for Grade Five (HTML or PDF)
 
A Money Unit developed for Grade 5 includes Math, Integration,and Learning center activities, bulletin board ideas, suggested teacher resources and evaluation sections. Activites are tied back to the Saskatchewan Education Mathematics Curriculum Guide (Elementary) with Strands, Topics and CELS covered within the unit.
Our Favourite Treat
 
This is one of a collection of teaching activities on Statistics Canada's Web site. The goal of this grade 1-2 activity is to encourage students to see the need for organizing information and to start developing the skills needed in data management. Students conduct an inquiry to determine the class' favourite type of Halloween candy. Candy wrappers are used to create a bar graph, data are described in mathematical terms and questions are posed about the data collected. The activity is presented as a Halloween theme but may be used at any time of the year.

This Stewart Resource unit deals with introducing the concept of patterning into the primary classroom. The unit provides a 10 day scope of learning objectives and the activites for each of the 10 days. Also included is activity suggestions for integrating this theme into other subjects.

Statistics Canada Learning Resources
 
Statistics Canada has developed a wide variety of statistical products and services which have been specifically designed for students and teachers and is offering easy access to them on its web site. These include on-line or CD-ROM access to a selection of electronic data, statistical profiles of Canadian communities, teachers' kits and lesson plans, teaching activities and an educator discussion forum for sharing ideas on the use of Canadian statistical information in teaching and learning.
Statistics Canada Web Page Contest
 
Every year Statistics Canada runs a Web page contest for elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students. The contest encourages students to display data in creative ways and illustrate conclusions that can be drawn from the data. A prize of $100 is offered for each grade level, and winning entries will be posted on Statistics Canada's web site. The closing date for submissions is in early April of each year.
Taking a census

This activity introduces students to the concept of a census. Students relate the census to an enumeration of households, to help them understand how and why a census is taken in Canada every five years (1-2 class periods).

Urban and Rural Communities
 
In this lesson, students will compare distinguishing features of urban and rural communities using data from Community Profiles, which is composed of Canadian census statistics. Students will read and interpret data from tables and summarize their findings.
What is the Average Height of Your Class?
 
This is one of a collection of teaching activities on Statistics Canada's Web site. This interactive Internet exercise generates a form for a class to input their heights, and produces a bar chart, means, medians and modes. The goal is to reinforce lessons on measurement (specifically height), data analysis, measures of central tendency, graphing and self-concept.
