Question from Madeline:

How many vertices does a hexagonal pyramid have??

Hi Madeline,

A pyramid is

a geometric solid with one base that is a polygon and all other faces are triangles with a common vertex.

Pyramids are named by the shape of the polygonal base so the Great Pyramid of Giza is a square pyramid since the base is a square. The vertices are the vertices of the polygonal base plus the one more vertex at the peak. Thus the Great Pyramid of Giza has 5 vertices.
