Question from Amber, a student:

Area of hexagon ABCDEF with the vertices (3,0) (7,0) (9,2) (7,4) (3,4) (1,0)

Hi Amber,

I am going to label the points A = (3,0), B = (7,0), etc. The points A, B and F = (1,0) all lie on the X-axis so you actually have a pentagon.

Divide the figure into two parts with the diagonal BD. FBDE is a trapezoid and hence you can find its area. The area of the triangle that remains, BCD, can be found using Heron's formula.
