Constrain the ship at sea.
- Fluid dynamics will aid in investigating which forces are acting on the ship and how much they are affecting the ship at dock. After determining which forces are acting on the ship, it can be determined how to best deal with these forces and reduce the movements of the boat.
Constrain the ship at dock
- An analysis is made of how the use of fenders dampens the forces and allow the ship to be constrained in a more solid manner.
Fenders act as a buffer between the ship and the dock (wharf). The set up is diagrammed below:
Optimize the dimensions of the mooring chains.
- The mooring chain needs to hold the ship securely while still not costing the company too much to purchase or replace when necessary. Therefore, cost and risk must be optimized using concepts studied in Calculus including differentiation and integration of equations.
