What is 3 squared?
20141112

From Christine: On a math test, it said "What is 3 squared?" It did NOT say "What's is (3)squared"
The teacher's explanation is that if there are no brackets or parenthesis, you ALWAYS square the number first then do the negative, so the answer should be 9, but I can't find anywhere that confirms this.
Help please. Answered by Robert Dawson.

A statistics question
20070107

From Rick: For many years TV executives used the guideline that 30 percent of the audience were watching each of the primetime networks and 10 percent were watching cable stations on a weekday night. A random sample of 500 viewers in the TampaSt Petersburg, Florida, area last Monday night showed that 165 homes were tuned in to the ABC affiliate, 140 to the CBS affiliate, 125 to the NBC affiliate, and the remainder were viewing a cable station. At the 0.05 significance level, can we conclude that the guideline is still reasonable? Answered by Penny Nom.

Can twice a square be a square?
20030325

From Mike: The other day it occurred to some students that they could think of no square number which is an integer, which can be divided into two equal square numbers which are intergers, Or put another way, no squared integer when doubled can equal another square integer. For example 5 squared plus 5 squared is 50, but 50 is not a square number. Answered by Walter Whiteley and Claude Tardif.
