4 carpenters can build 8 houses in 10 days. 2016-04-05
From Kenneth:
Hello:

Here is my question:

4 carpenters can build 8 houses in 10 days. 2 carpenters can build how many houses in 15 days?

Here is one solution:

The number of houses built is jointly proportional to the number of carpenters and the number of days. So h = kcd where k is a constant. Substituting the given: 8 = k*40, so k = 1/5. Our formula is then h = cd/5. I'm not sure how to determine whether or not one unit is jointly proportional to any other unit.

However, if 2 carpenters are unknown as in 4 carpenters can build 8 houses in 10 days. How many carpenters can build 6 houses in 15 days? What is the solution using this method? And likewise, if days are unknown, as in 4 carpenters can build 8 houses in 10 days. 2 carpenters can build 6 houses in how many days?

I thank you for your assistance.

Proportional rates 2013-10-10
From Varsha:
A province's Ministry of Social services has found that both the number of people needing social assistance and the province's total expenditures on social assistance are proportional to the rate of unemployment. Last August when the provincial unemployment rate was 8.4 %, the province provided assistance to 89,300 individuals at a total cost of 4107.4 million. The forecast unemployment rate for next August is 7.9%. How many people can the province expect to need social assistance next August? What amount should the province budget for social assistance in August?

Ratios and proportions with mixed units 2010-05-13
From Kenneth:
Is it incorrect to have a proportion with numbers containing units that are not the same on both sides of the equal sign?

Here is an example: $0.07/$1.00 = ?/$0.89 is okay, but if I add a different unit (20 ounces) to one side of the equal sign but not the same unit to the other, is the proportion incorrect?

$0.07/$1.00 = ?/$0.89/20 ounces.

In order to determine the missing amount, the calculation becomes ($0.07/$1.00)/$0.89/20 ounces = $?, but is this proportion correct with the units as they are? Two dollar-units cancel leaving dollar/ounces equals $?/ounces, but is this correct?

Knitting gauge and felting 2003-10-27
From Sara:

I wish to create a pattern to knit an item that will then be felted, thus, shrink as a result. In order to determine the proper gauge to use in creating the item, I produced a gauge swatch, noted the original properties and then the post-felting properties. They are as follow:

Before Felting:

20 stitches(width) x 20 rows(height)yielded:
Gauge: 3.2 stitches(width) and 4 rows(height) = 1"
Dimensions: 6.25"(width) x 5.25"(height)

After Felting:

20 stitches(width) x 20 rows(height)
Dimensions: 4"(width) x 3"(height)

How do I calculate the percentage change in size to accurately determine the number of stitches and rows needed to produce the desired dimensions for the finished (felted) item?
