Is there an equation to find what percent of 0 is 1? |
2020-03-09 |
|
From Asher: Question: Is there an equation to find what percent of 0 is 1.
I remember learning quite a long time ago that the answer inst 0 and it isn't infinity. I'm pretty sure it was something like %=0 approaching infinity or %=1 approaching infinity. And I know it depends what value you assign the numbers i.e. dollars or temperature. Furthermore, is asking "what percent 1 dollar is of 0 dollars" the same question as "what percent profit do you make from selling something worth 0 dollars for 1 dollar."
Thank you for your time and consideration

Pre tax and post tax percentages |
2018-05-22 |
|
From Tom: Hi,
I work in a clothes shop which can also do mail-orders. My Head Office
has sent a report with which we can check the records we keep in store
tally with those at HO.
According to that report we have taken £2578.25 in orders, excluding VAT (20%),
which would therefore be £3093.91 including VAT (2578.25+20%=3093.91).
According to my records, we have taken £3179.32 including VAT, which would be
£2543.45 excluding VAT (3179.32-20%=2543.45).
Why is it that the difference between the VAT inclusive figures (3179.32-3093.91) is +£85.41, but
the difference between the VAT exclusive figures (2543.45-2578.26) is -£34.81?
Now, I can see from the report that 1 order has not been recorded by HO, and I
know that our average order value is around £30, so the -£34.81 makes sense.
But surely both figures should be a minus, regardless of whether they include VAT?
I'm sure there is an obvious answer, but I just cannot see it! Any help would be gratefully
received.
Thanks,
Tom Answered by Penny Nom. |

The definition of percent ( % ) |
2015-03-07 |
|
From Kenneth: Hello:
I saw this definition online from the Free Dictionary (The Free Dictionary.com) regarding the definition of percent (%):
"Noun 1. a percent sign - a sign (`%') used to indicate that the number preceding it should be understood as a proportion multiplied by 100."
What is this "proportion" multiplied by 100?
When I think of a proportion, I think of a/b = c/d. How can a number preceding the percent sign be understood as a proportion X 100?

A mixture problem |

From Lucy: Hi,
For the following question:
Ten pounds of mixed nuts contain 50 percent peanuts. How many pounds of peanuts must be added so that the final mixture has 60 percent peanuts?(A) 2.5 (B) 5 (C) 6 (D) 10 (E) 12.5,
my math book gives my the following explanation: Try choice (C): 6 pounds of peanuts. The original 10-pound mixture contained 50 percent peanuts, or 5 pounds. Now you have 11 pounds of peanuts in a 16-pound mixture, more than 60 percent. This result automatically eliminates choices (D) and (E) as well. Why would this result automatically rule out D and E? How can you tell?

Percent change in sales |

|
From Sui: Hi,
I would like to ask your favor for reviewing the following percent change in sales calculation, did I do it right? I am surprise/wondering with the big amount of the percentage result. Your assistance and guidance would be highly appreciate.
Sales for month of August 2000: 5,198,750 IDR
Sales for month of October 2000: 62,291,700 IDR
Difference = 62,291,700 IDR - 5,198,750 IDR = 57,092,950 IDR
Percentage change = 57,092,950 IDR : 5,198,750 IDR = 10.98 X 100 = 1,098%
Sales for month of February 2008: 1,664,800 IDR
Sales for month of August 2008: 161,715,307 IDR
Difference = 161,715,307 IDR - 1,664,800 IDR = 160,050,507 IDR
Percentage change = 160,050,507 : 1,664,800 = 96.14 X 100 = 9,614%

Markup and discount to get a sale price |
2013-03-02 |
|
From Warren:
If you are an ardent shopper you will be aware of the discount (% decrease) marketing strategy to produce the sale price. I began to wonder just how much mark-up (% increase) was added initially to an item in order to deliver the discounted sale price.
It was simple to construct a formula to convert one to the other.
For example a 30% (mark down) decrease in price required a 42.86% (mark up) to increase the price initially to Tag price. However when I started apply the formulae to a number of circumstances I noticed some very interesting circumstances associated with this relationship
For example a 99.999999% decrease is numerically equal to a 9,999,999,925% increase (huge ratio difference) while conversely a 0.1% decrease is numerically equal to a 0.10010010% increase (Infinitesimally small ratio difference) so the patterns appears logarithmic not linear.
However what really caught my attention was this pattern
See http://www.ozsmart.com/doc/percentage.htm
My questions is why does the decline in the ratio of increases in required mark up (%) price peak at 50 and 51% precisely and then expand again as the percentage move higher
Any explanation would be appreciated Answered by Harley Weston. |

5% can be no. 1 which would mean 21 employees
15% can be no. 2 which would mean 64 employees
60% can be no. 3 which would mean 257 employees
15% can be no. 4 which would mean 64 employees
5% can be no. 5 which would mean 21 employees

22 % are no. 2 which would mean 94 employees
60% are no. 3 which would mean 270 employees
15% are no. 4 which would mean 41 employees
5% are no. 5 which would mean 3 employees
Now my question is how do I find the percentage difference between both
the scenarios of should be versus reality? I don't think it is normal subtraction, is it? any help would be appreciated.

The acreage covered by a berm |

From Katherine: I need to know how to figure the acreage a berm might cover. Berm size is 815 ft. long with a 5' height average at a 3:1 slope It will have a 4 ft. top.
Also how do you figure how wide a base would be for a berm at a 3:1 slope? I am thinking for every 3 ft horizontal I need to go 1 foot vertical starting from the center out. Is this only half the berm and need to mirror it for the other side to get a total base width? Answered by Penny Nom. |

Commission |
2010-04-24 |
|
From TAHIR: I want to pre-determine the amount of commission on sale of my product which will be the amount that I shall have to pay .
For example, the price is $ 600and commission 5% .
1) I calculate commission on 600 @ 5% = $ 30
When added $ 600 the retail price = $ 630
2) But on $ 630, 5% commission = $ 31.50
So we make a loss of $ 1.50 .
3) Again if we add this $ 1.50 to $ 630 the price = 631.50
But the commission when calculated does not tally
and we make a loss of $ 0.075.
Please let me know how to determine the commission beforehand so that it matches our accounts. Answered by Penny Nom. |

Descending Percentages |

From Chris: Hi
I'm having a problem working out the percentage target achievement, when i'm
calculating a descending indicator. For example, if you take something like
the number of contracts cancelled. You might give your retentions team the task
to make sure that no more than 2 customers cancel a contract wihin a particular
month. If exactly 2 customers cancel their contract, that should represent 100%
achievement of the target, but i'm really struggling to work out what that percentage
would be if 1 or 3 customers cancelled.

A car loan |
2009-05-06 |
|
From Cindy: A person takes out a car loan in the amount of $11,170.00 @ 4.5% interest. The person makes 17 payments of $500.00, then for the 18th payment (this person 'finds' some $) and pays off the whole thing. How much was their last (18th) payment? How much overall did they pay in principle? and interest?
The person who made the initial loan then takes $11,156.25 and places it into a High Interest Savings Account @ 2.25% annually on Nov 18, 2003. How much is now in the High Interest Savings Account if no futher funds have been added to the account and no withdrawls have been made?
Thanks for your help with this. I have been trying on and off for 3 years to figure this out.

Interest rate over two periods |
2009-04-12 |
|
From Kenneth: Hello:
How is the average determined for the following amount if it earns
compound interest?
Here are my calculations, but I'm not certain that they are correct:
Initial amount invested $500.00:
$500.00 @ 5% = $525.00.
$525.00 @ -2% = $514.50.
$14.50/$500.00 = 2.9% divided by 2 equals an average of 1.45%.
If this average, 1.45%, is correct, how can I use 5% and -2% to
determine the same average?
Is it possible?
I thank you for your reply. Answered by Penny Nom. |

What is the pre GST price? |
2008-12-05 |
|
From Chris: I've been looking at a few answers to the question of before and after GST price calculation.
the suggestion have been :: multiply the pre GST price by 1.10 to get the
price and reverse to get a pre GST price.
But how do you calculate the pre GST price from an existing retail price?
For example if you take an item that is $150.00 and multiply it by 0.10
you get $15.00 as the GST add on. Apparently giving you $135.00 as the
pre GST price. However if you then multiply $135.00 by 1.10 you get the
$148.50 as the total.
So the question is how does one calculate the real pre GST price from
an existing retail price?

Total profit |

From Rhonda: I help to manage a concession stand. We sell a variety of items. Some have a profit of 60%, some 80%, etc. We have done nothing scientific to choose our prices. We just try to stay in the ballpark of schools around us. Our administrator wants to pay those that run the concession stand a percent of what is in the cash box after start-up money is taken out. We have some gathered some data (not much) on how many of each item we sell and can certainly calculate percent profit. Is the profit for the entire concession stand a weighed average? I'm thinking (% profit on candy)(number candy sold) + (percent profit nachos)(number nachos sold) + (percent profit pop)(number pop sold), etc. Will this work? From Kenneth: Hello:
If the sales tax on merchandise sold in stores is 6%. The item is
multiplied by the sales tax of 6%. For example, the sales tax on
pencils worth $1.00 is 6% X $1.00 is $0.06 or 6 cents plus $1.00 for
a total of $1.06.
1. If the tax is 6%/$1.00, why doesn't the dollar sign as a unit cancel
after the multiplication?
Isn't it 6%/$1.00 X $1.00 or whatever the dollar amount is?

More on a percentage question |
2007-08-23 |
|
From Dee: In a previous question, you answered:
"What percentage of $34.51 is $10.71?
I translate this English statement into a mathematical statement (equation) using the following
"what" is the unknown, call it x
"percent" is per-one-hundred, that is over 100
"of" is multiplication
"is" is the verb, which in an equation is the equal sign
Thus the English statement above becomes
x/100 $34.51 = $10.71
Solving for x yields
x = 31.03
Hence the gross profit is 31% of your selling price."
How did you solve for 'x' Answered by Penny Nom. |

Percentage calculations |
2007-08-15 |
|
From Lorrinn: I process gifts for a nonprofit agency. For some gifts I calculate administrative fees. I understand calculating a straight percentage of a gift (i.e. 10% of $100.00 = $10.00). That's a fee "off the top". What I would like to better understand is the theory or the "mathematical reasoning" behind calculating percentages "on the inside". For example, to calculate 10% "on the inside" of $100.00, I use the following formula: $100.00/1.10*10.0%. The answer here is $9.09. I know how to do this, but I would like to better understand the "why". Thank you. Answered by Penny Nom. |

Power walking |

|
From Wendy: I have an exercise routine of 'power walking', approx. 5-6 days per week. I carry a pedometer with me during these walks so that I can keep track of the distance of each walk. I've created a weekly walking chart on my computer, so each time I get back from a walk, I enter my stats, such as kilometers and miles walked that day, as well as my start and finish time. At the end of each week, before I printed out my completed chart, I would calculate out what my average walking distance was, for that particular week.
At the end of each month, I would calculate:
[1] I'd add up my total kilometers and miles walked for that month. (a no brainer ~ I could do that one!)
**But also, I would work out the percentages of the following:
[A] What my average daily distance p/walk was, for that month
[B] What my average time spent, per walk was, for that month Answered by Penny Nom. |

Percentage Difference |
2006-07-25 |
|
From Sandra:
I have two numbers (1530 and 1315). How do I calculate the percentage difference.
For example: I have one loader that lifts 1530 lbs. and another loader that lifts 1315 lbs. I know the difference is 215 lbs. How much greater lift capacity does the loader that lifts 1530 lbs. have than the loader that lifts 1315 lbs.?
The formula that I used was:
1530 - 1315 = 215
215/1315 = .163498 or 16.3%
Is this correct?

50% line, but I'd like to know how to determine any percentage (horizontally) within a triangle . I know that if I put a horizontal line though the height of the triangle I won't be showing 50% above and 50% below. The bottom part has to be larger (correct me if I'm wrong).
I'm not concerned about height as I am wanting to break down the percentages into 60% at the bottom, 25% in the middle and 15% at the top.

I would take 150 times .30 and that equals 45. I would then take 45 plus 150 and that would give me 195. My problem is now 195 is my list price. If I turn around and give my customer a 30 percent discount off the 195 the price ends up being 136.50. Which is less than the 150 that I started with. Percentage markup |
2006-01-10 |
|
From Ian:
I have a markup question for you. I work for a painting company, specifically I estimate cost and sell painting projects. Within our office, we've had some discussion on how markup should be calculated for materials that we include in our prices. These are the two scenarios that we've come up with.
1. Mark up as a percentage of the cost: Cost = $ 10.00 X 15% Markup = $ 1.50. $ 1.50 + $ 10.00 equals $ 11.50 as a sale price.
2. Selling Price = Cost / (1-the desired profit margin). This would equal to $ 10.00 / (1-.15) = $ 11.76 roughly.
If you have any information on whether one is more correct and why, I would appreciate this. I want to make sure that I am marking things up correctly.

From A student:
Question: 1) The average of 12 is 5. The average of of 8 of these numbers ia 6. What is the average of the other four.
2)Mathilda is playing a mathematical game with Matthew. Each player starts from a point, then moves in a straight line to a second point, then to a third and so on. The moves are not made randomly, but are determined by a mathematical rule. The object of the game is to find the rule. It is Mathilda's turn to move on the grid . She starts at point M (3,9), moves to point N (2,4) and then to point O (0,0). Given Mathilda's rule, what could be the coordinates of the next point to which she might move?

Percent difference |
2004-04-10 |
|
From A parent: For a school science project, my son Alex is taking measurements of plant growth at regular intervals. As part of the data, he must provide the maximum percent difference observed in the categories his team has identified.
So, for example he has six plants with four measurements each. (He has more, but I'll keep it simple) For the first plant he measured 2mm, 2.4mm, 2.9mm, and 3.2mm. For the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th plants, he has similar numbers. Is there a way to calculate the maximum percent difference between any two plants in his measurements during the project? Doing it for each combination would be tedious. Answered by Penny Nom. |

Prescription drug coverage |
2003-12-04 |
|
From Khadijah: Last week congressional approval was given to legislation involving prescription drug coverage for seniors. One summary of the legislation explains that it is estimated that in 2006 a senior will pay a premium of $35 per month, then pay their first $250 in pharmacy bills. After the bills reach $250, the coverage would pick up 75% of their bills that bring their total bills between the $250 and $2250 mark. After their bills reached a total of $2250, the senior would be responsible for all bills bringing their total annual bills between $2250 to $5100. Then any bills after the $5100 mark has been reached will be 95% covered by the insurance. Using this information, letís analyze the situation of a senior who accumulates $6000 in pharmacy bills over one year and has the insurance coverage. Over the course of this year, how many dollars will the senior pay? Answered by Penny Nom. |

Profit margin |

|
From Chet:
My salesman calculates a customers profit margin by dividing what the customer paid by what he sells for, then subtracting that answer from 1. For example a customer sells a product for $15. He bought it for $10. 15/10=.66 Subtract that from 1 and get a profit % of 33% Here's my question: If I want to figure what a reseller will sell a product for if he wants 40% margin(by the technique above), what formula do I use? A 40% markup |
2003-06-12 |
|
From Nick: I am attempting to determine the Retail price of an item that costs me 11.00. Our company wants to sell it at a markup of 40%. I calculated this two ways, first the way I thought it should be done. Second, the way the calculator does it (and my accountant).
- Cost + Cost*(percentmarkup/100)= retail price 11.00 + 11.00*.40 = retail price 11.00 + 4.40 = 15.40 retail price
- Using the calculators Mark Up key the answer is 18.33. Or 7.33 more than the cost or 67%.
I am confused by this Mark Up key and how it calculates. I used a cost of $10.00 and marked it up 50%. I thought it should equal $15.00 but the calculator says $20.00? This seems to be 100% markup, yes? Can you explain the difference between the way I did it and the way a Business calculator does it? Answered by Penny Nom. |

Averages of Averages |

From Amy: If in the month of October the % of Payments Received was 80.74% and in November it decreased to 69.36%. Can you take the 80.74-69.36/69.36 to get the % of difference. In otherwords can you take the % of difference when the numbers you are comparing are %'s???? Can you also take an average of an average? For example, average number of payments received in October was 25.00%, average number of payments received November was 50.00%, and the average number of payments received in December was 15.00%. Do you average (25.00%, 50.00% and 15.00%) or do you have to go back to the numbers that calculated the averages. For example, October 25.00% was based on 25 payments being received out of a possible 100. So instead of taking the average of the averages, do you take the average payments and the average customers over the 3 months and calculate the average??? Answered by Harley Weston. |

2002-03-08 |
|
From Tedd: Can you give me the formulas for calculating percentage differences between two numbers? For example: if the first number is 10 and the second number is 15, then the second number is 50% larger than the first number. However, the formula to calculate that percentage won't work if the first number is greater than the second number as in the following example: The first number is 15 and the second number is 10, with the second number being 33.3% less than the first number. Or maybe I'm mistaken and the same formula will work in both situations. Answered by Penny Nom. |

From Carmen: I have a question from my OAC finite class. I've come across a problem with the coefficient of variation. Is the CV 1.75% or 0.00175% or 0.0175%? I've had some students change leave the units as is, change them both to mm or change them both to meters...so which is it and why? Answered by Penny Nom. |

I can't get the picture to copy to this form so I guess I will have to try and describe the picture the best that I can. The top right hand corner is folded to the left side, almost half way down. The width of the paper is a ( the width of the bottom part which is not folded.) The creased side is L and the part shorter part of the folded area is x (the part that would have been the top right of the original piece.) Answered by Chris Fisher. |

.400 in Baseball |
1999-12-15 |
|
From Nieve Nielson: I have several questions to ask about the probability of getting a .400 in baseball: - What is the probability of a baseball player hitting a .400 in one game, considering that the hitter is up to bat four times?
- What is the probability of a baseball player hitting a .400 in a season, considering that there are 100 games in a season? With the first two questions in mind:
- Considering that baseball has been around for about 100 years, about how many people should hit .400 inthat time?

Percentage change |
1999-12-08 |
|
From Michael Weinberg: I am the Laboratory information system supervisor in a hospital. Our computer system calculates the change of specific results to monitor a patient's status. But there is a problem with the calculation in the base code of the program. If one day the patient has a Blood count of 100 (P for Previous) then the next day the Blood count is 75 (C for current), the computer should calculate the change as -25% using the calculation |P-C|/P= D (D for Delta) and then check for positive or negative by the equation If P>C then D*-1 or If P The program is calculating using the equation: ((P/C)-1)*100 in the above situation this would calculate the Delta as 33.33333% Referenced in a Laboratory manual published before computers were used to calculate the delta changes. . . . From John Barekman: Statitistics: Estimating the population mean when the standard deviation is known: I am not sure which n to use in the formula for the confidence interval equation: x +/- z*(standard deviation/sqrt(n)) If we have data of ten people, and if we have the data of ten sets of ten people each, what is the difference in the n that we use? What is the difference between the standard deviation and the standard error? Are we using the number of sampling means or just the number of samples? Answered by Harley Weston. |
